Introduction Rock Hill is the largest city of York County covering a total area of 80.4 km² (31.1 mi²). It is the fifth largest city of South Carolina in terms of its population. An interesting story is attached with its name. It is believed that when rail roads of Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta were being constructed, the crew members stumbled upon a small, flinty hill and dubbed the spot “Rock Hill.” Thus Rock Hill derived its name in 1852. It was incorporated in 1892.
The climate is characterized by warm, humid summers and mild winters. The average high temperature in summer is 87 degrees Fahrenheit while average high temperatures in winter are in the low 50’s.
